Eastern (Greentown) senior Brittany Neeley headlines this week’s IBCA/Subway Player of the Week recipients after a 48-point outburst in her team’s Class 2A northern semistate victory.
Neeley is joined by Fort Wayne South senior DeJoyah Johnson, Evansville Mater Dei sophomore Tori Schickel, Kouts junior Max Everaert, North Montgomery senior Nathan Rogers and Evansville Bosse junior JaQuan Lyle as honorees for the week of Feb. 18-23.
The 5-6 Neeley was cited in girls’ District 2 for the second consecutive week after she exploded for 48 points and 20 rebounds in leading Eastern (Greentown) to a 74-55 victory over Fort Wayne Luers. An Indiana University recruit for track and cross country, Neeley made 13-of-23 shots, 3-of-3 3-pointers and 19-of-21 free throws in propelling the Comets (22-3) to the Class 2A state finals.
Johnson, a 5-7 guard who claimed girls’ District 1 laurels, helped Fort Wayne South (24-3) to its first semistate crown. She scored a team-high 11 points with seven rebounds and three steals in the Archers’ 47-44 win at Warsaw in the Class 4A northern semistate. In a hard-fought, tight contest, a Johnson basket with 2:30 to go in the fourth quarter gave her team the lead for good.
The 6-1 Schickel received accolades in girls’ District 3 after a near-perfect shooting performance in Evansville Mater Dei’s 56-49 overtime win over Heritage Christian in the Class 2A southern semistate. She scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds while converting 7-of-7 field goals and 6-of-7 free throws to lead the Wildcats (27-2) in their attempt to capture a second consecutive Class 2A state championship. Schickel previously was honored Jan. 28-Feb. 2.
Everaert, Rogers and Lyle were recognized with respective honors for boys’ District 1, District 2 and District 3.
The 6-2 Everaert averaged 26.0 points over two games en route to his honor. First, he dropped in a career-high 35 points as Kouts defeated River Forest 71-57. Later, Everaert tallied 17 points as the Mustangs improved to 19-2 with an 88-45 triumph over LaCrosse.
Rogers received laurels after he averaged 35.0 points and 9.0 rebounds in two games. The 6-2 guard started his week with 34 points and nine rebounds as North Montgomery posted a 70-50 victory over North Putnam. Rogers then produced 34 points and nine rebounds as the Chargers (5-15) squeezed past Greencastle 62-56. For the season, Rogers averages 22.3 points and 4.8 rebounds.
The 6-4 Lyle received IBCA weekly accolades for the third time this season following a week where he averaged 30.5 points, 19.5 rebounds and 5.0 assists. Lyle began by scoring 20 points with 20 rebounds and five assists as Evansville Bosse beat Mt. Vernon (Posey) 73-59. Lyle then unloaded for 41 points, 19 rebounds and five assists as the Bulldogs moved to 17-5 with an 87-82 overtime triumph over Evansville Reitz. Over the two games, Lyle was 16-of-38 from the field and 28-of-36 on free throws. He previously was cited the weeks of Dec. 10-15 and Jan. 28-Feb. 2.
This is the fifth season for the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association Player of the Week program and the first season it is presented by Subway Restaurants of Indiana, a primary sponsor of the IBCA. Subway, in its third season as an IBCA sponsor, encourages athletes to “play hard and eat fresh.”
Player of the Week winners are chosen each week from each of the IHSAA’s three districts. Girls winners will be chosen from now through the week following March 2. Boys winners be selected from now through the week following March 23.
