The Kokomo Lady Kat soccer team traveled to Bloomington North High School for the annual Hoosier Cup, a tournament that features 24 boys and 24 girls teams from around Indiana. After posting a perfect 3-0 record over the two-day event, the Wildkats were crowned Hoosier Cup “Joe Kelley Division” pool champions.
“I am so proud of this entire team; we played an outstanding tournament this weekend making us 6-2 for the season,” said head coach Myles Geary. “Our defense played solid, and while they don’t end up in the (statistics) column, the victories aren’t possible without them. Michaela Wade, Aubrey Whiteman, Kendra Ryker and Tabby Branyan are playing on a whole other level right now. Katie Whiteman had to come back from the midfield and fill in at defense and played superbly all weekend no matter where she was on the field.”
On Friday night, the Lady Kats scored a 3-1 victory over Heritage Christian. Cheyenne Eltringham scored twice and Anh Pham added a third goal for Kokomo. Bre Kinder had a pair of assists, Taylor Coram added an assist, and Becca Wade had nine saves in goal to secure the Lady Kats win.
Eltringham and Taylor Sparling each scored a Kokomo goal in game two as the Kats downed Bedford North Lawrence 2-0. Becca Wade recorded the shutout with nine saves while Holly Stewart and Eltringham record assists.
In game three, Geary said the Lady Kats dug deep after two tough games and snagged a 3-2 victory over Martinsville. Coram started the scoring in the first 20 minutes on an assist from Eltringham. Spencer Wesche put Kokomo up 2-0 on the Lady Kats only shot on goal in the final 20 minutes of the first half. Three minutes after a Martinsville goal in the 51st minute, Kinder fired a shot from 25-yards out on the left side to find the upper part of the net to stretch the Kokomo lead to 3-1 and put the game away and secure the trophy for the Kokomo squad.
